The Story of a Little Girl from India and Her Artistic Dreams
Hi there! I am Anju!
I want to share a bit about the journey that brought me here, and the lessons it’s taught me about life, creativity, and community. Every experience has given me clarity, gratitude, and a deeper understanding of the path ahead. This is my story so far.
Childhood and Early Dreams of an Artist
I grew up in India, surrounded by my loving family. My dad adored me and always showed immense faith in me, which I believe boosted my confidence in life. My mom was pretty strict, but I’m grateful for that because she taught me valuable life skills and how to make my way in the world. I wholeheartedly believe that your upbringing plays a major role in your life.
Fortunately, my household was modern, with hardly any restrictions. My dad was a general manager in a bank, and my mom was a housewife. My brother was talented in his own way, and I was the creative one. I saw art in everything. I remember making flowers from onion and orange peels, painting and crafting, collecting dry branches, feeding squirrels in the garden, creating flower pathways around the house, and playing dress-up with friends.
Bakul Tree Memories
Walking to school through a magical garden at six or seven years old is one of my strongest memories. It had a huge Bakul (Spanish Blossom) tree. I would sit under that tree, collect flowers, tie them with thread and put them in my hair, smell their fragrance, and watch them fall, completely lost in the moment. I truly felt at ease when I was with nature. It’s the one constant in my life. And that has never changed.
There are so many stories I’d like to share, and one day, I’ll write more about them. I was the entertainer at school and would happily perform at the teacher’s or friends’ request. Most teachers called me Kalakaar (meaning artist/creator), and friends called me Archu.
My Journey to the Big Stage and New Friendships
When I was 10 years old, my dad moved us to a bigger city. To get into a new school, the headmaster told me I had to sing in front of 5,000 kids, and I did. Soon, in the new school, I was devoted to editing the school magazine, organising gatherings, and singing at major celebrations. The stage became a big part of my life, and I performed whenever there was an opportunity.
At 14, I joined the local theatre company, performing dance, acting, singing in orchestras, and painting whenever I could. One invitation to act in a Bollywood movie helped me realise that art was my true path, and I decided to follow it, with my family’s full support.
My Boy & Landing in Aotearoa
I received a bundle of joy—my lifeline—when I was 18. Becoming a mum was an indescribable joy, and we became best buddies for life. With the right choices and timing, we made our way to beautiful Aotearoa (New Zealand).
I was mesmerised by New Zealand’s beauty. As much as I missed my friends and family, I felt a deep sense of ease here. I met the most wonderful, kind, and warm-hearted people. Their way of life felt familiar, like a reflection of how I had always thought and lived. It didn’t take long to bond with Kiwis and build lifelong friendships. Over time, my love for this land grew stronger, and I knew I was home. My boy and I found a permanent joy in life, and a smile never left our faces after we started our lives in a new land.
Life’s Philosophy Unfolded
Whenever I have to make big decisions, I ask myself if I am at peace with the situation I am in and whether it will change anytime soon. I also consider whether my son is happy with my decisions, and then I went for it. Once I have those answers, it doesn’t take me long to decide and stick with it. I try not to dwell on the past. I stay focused and optimistic, and I do my best to handle any situation for my family.
A big part of my self-belief comes from my dad, my mum, and now my son, who lets me be myself. I am truly grateful for everything life has given me—the challenges, the lessons, and the guidance. These experiences have made me stronger, helped me appreciate life more, and feel comfortable with who I am, allowing me to create a safe and loving environment for my family.
Innovative Mind & Artistic Opportunities
When I arrived in New Zealand, I realised it was a new country full of opportunities, and my innovative mind was working nonstop. As you know, everything takes time, and it did for me as well. On top of adjusting to a new country, I had a teenage son, no car, and faced many ups and downs. It took a while to get my personal life on track before I could focus on new ventures.
By 2005, I was ready to be an entrepreneur again. I started a graphic design business while studying small business management, which quickly converted into an art gallery. I began running art classes and workshops, teaching holistic Indian home remedies, and offering cooking workshops. I shared everything I knew, creating the best life I could for us.
Living Philosophy Through Experience
Then, in 2009, by accident, I came into the Bollywood event business. That is another fun story to tell, and you can read it on my blog. It has been a whirlwind of joy, colours, people, exploration, and magic that the Bollywood party brought to my life. My cultural roots have always been strong, and this has allowed me to blossom. I always felt really proud of India and respected the land that gave me life—a deep, meaningful sense of spirituality, holistic living, and Ayurveda.
At the same time, I am in love with New Zealand and want to give my best to anything that comes my way. It is my respect for this lovely country that opened its arms to me and my son.
Adapting and Changing Paths to be Here.
In 2020, my business was at its peak, and then COVID hit. I had to let go of my commercial studios, and everything changed. I’m glad I never lost faith and never had to close this beautiful part of my life. By the end of 2020, the council changed the parameters for events, and I got a chance to organise the biggest events of my life.
As soon as the lockdown was lifted, my phone started ringing. I knew then that I could sustain the Bollywood Party and the Costume hire studio.
Over time, my journey expanded into multicultural events, art exhibitions, guest speaking, and a holistic spice blend and wellness business. Today, I teach dance wellness, mindful cooking, and meditative art. This website brings all of my work together and reflects the path that feels most aligned moving forward.
A Heartfelt Thank You for your support.
Thank you for being here and taking the time to read my story — I truly appreciate it. One of my favourite quotes is, “Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.” It’s a simple yet powerful reminder to pause, reflect, and soften the way we meet life’s challenges.
As this journey continues, my intention is to create colourful, mindful, and welcoming spaces where community, creativity, and wellbeing come together. Whether through gatherings, art, or shared moments of reflection, I look forward to staying connected and exploring new possibilities together — with open hearts and gentle curiosity.
If this resonates with you, I’d love for you to stay connected.
