Market Day – Abstract Family Original Acrylic Painting by Anju Desai
Title: Market Day – Abstract Family Original Acrylic Painting.
Artist – Anju Desai
Description:
This painting is a reflection of my observation as a child or as a teenager watching an Indian mother with a few kids. Most likely when I used to visit the market area or festival, I would see a woman with 2 or 3 kids. It usually looked like all going in different directions and still together, smiling, shouting, and holding on to each other. I used to think they were all going to the market or she was going to sell vegetables or fish or flowers… in short, she needed to earn something today so she could sit down and find shade to have lunch with her kids.
In the state of Maharashtra, you will usually see a woman dressed in our ancient Marathi style saree (called Nauvari saree) or something just draped for convenience and ease for the busy day ahead. In my opinion, those women looked like models. They could replace anyone on the stage and walk the wrap beautifully. Strong posture, tall, and slim as they would be carrying heavy baskets on their head throughout the day. Their hips would swing like those models. I wonder if that’s why many girls learn how to walk in the style by having heavy books on their heads.
My salute to all those gorgeous women giving their best to their children and living life with pride. That is still a strong memory in my head… empowering me for my journey to be grateful for what I have.
